My Marble Run

On the 20th of August we got to did another PBL challenge and it was the Marble run. We got to have four people in our group but we had three. my group was Alice, Blake and I. We had 5 newspapers and a meter of tape. We had one test with the Marble the Marble had to hit a can that was two meter away. If you hit the can you get 5 points and the team with the most points won. We had half an hour to do it. We went to go strong we folded the newspaper to create a circle so the Marble can fit in the hole. We did that four times. we taped it  together so it made it long And then another two went under it for some support. Its was our go.  The Marble went. it was so close to the can but it did not make it. We came 2nd it was lot's of fun.

my super Math broads

At are school we do maths boards, if you don't know what a math board is i will show you. Every week my teacher puts a question up on a slide and we have to do them on our maths boards. On the maths board it says to solve it numerically that means you solve it just like normal e.g 2x2=4 just like that. And then it says Write a word problem, that means you write a word problem. Then we have to give a visual solution, this is my favourite, so you can get a picture to solve it. And the picture can be a car or a truck want ever you want, so that is very fun. Solve it another way is the last one to do, so you just solve it a another way so you do the some question but you do it another way so you can take a look at this maths board I have done. Why don't you try to do a maths board?

what are we doing in are PBL?

For our PBL our driving question is: 'How can innovation improve our lives?" What do you think helps our lives?. We had to make a boat that had to float and see how much marbles can it hold till water gets in our boat. In my group there was me, Max, Benjamin and Blake. We only have straws, paper, tape and some  cups so we got some straws and warped it around with strap around it so it will float. So we put some cups on the top of the straws. We tried to get so bits from the cup on the side of boat to make it even on each side. But we did not do it in time so we had to to that we called it shh fish in the sink Blake did it. We looked at the other boats that looked good. It was our turn. My heart was pumping we put one marble in it was above the water and one more some it was under the water it took 7 to make the beast sink. The best boat got 64 marbles. We come 2nd to last that was better than last.

Are you going to do the challenge?

what are we reading about this term

This term in reading we have been reading about the environment. I have enjoyed how as kids we can look after the earth. For reading this week, my group read this article: Conservation. Conservation is about caring for our earth and animals.

The new ideas I have now since I have read this text are:

  • we need to stop deforestation because it is destroying some animals habitats
  • we need to stop cutting off rhino horns because that is how they protect themselves
  • we need to act know to save the planet because we don't want to live in rubbish
  • there is always ways we can help, like - picking up rubbish, helping animals, protecting our forests and banning hunting endangered animals

I have learned that our earth is dying  because of us we need to stop. Here is my poster

Do you want to live in rubbish?

my kindness PBL blog

This term our Project Based Learning (PBL) has been about kindness and the big question was:

How can we build community through our actions?

First, we explored some collaborative activities and discussed how we could include kindness and build a sense of community through our actions at camp. Next, we were organised into groups where we had to unpack the above question. In our groups we considered how we could spread community and kindness through our entire school community. We decided that we would offer something that was free and would make others happy.

We created an action plan and we were going to give out cookies with tags on them saying have a nice day, but then the teacher said to us and said you should do something that doesn't cost money. We decided we should take people out for a game.

For our final product our group took the other hubs out for a game of rip-pa rugby because our school had ripa's and we also played infected and ball elimination.

Reflection: my group did very well but we had to take out 60 people and there was only five of us so 3 went to rippa one went to ball elimination and one went to infected but it all worked out. It worked out because we were organised and the children had fun.

How did our action build a sense of community in the school - we taught everyone how to play the game and this made them happy.

I contributed being the ref in the game, organised equipment, made certificates and talked with the teachers and made kindness tokens.

I think the PBL might impact on others by thinking how kind you can be and that some people can be kind.

What I learned about working with others was how some people do no work until we get out of the class and that some people do lots of work.

the best race car track ever

This term our Project Based Learning (PBL) has been about design and the big question was; How can we use a Steam approach to make a marketable product?

First we learned what STEAM stood for.
S for Science
T for Technology
E for Engineering
A for the Arts
and M for Maths
Then we were given challenges. The first to make a chair using newspaper, string and straws that was able to hold a figure made out of multi-link blocks.
Then; make a table that was able to balance MnMs for the team. We were much better at the second challenge because …the chair was harder because it had strong things when mams are small and light.

In Literacy we learned to write up science experiments and to write a technology report using the design process of ask, imagine, plan, create, improve and share.  my work

Our next step was to form teams and ask ourselves the big question again.
How can we use a Steam approach to make a marketable product? Our aim was to create enough products or experiences and sell it to raise money for charity.

My team made this…we made a race car track we made out of cardboard, duct tape, popsicle stick

Reflection

My highlight from this PBL was…we made $34 lots of people have people came to are stand and we had music playing in the background it work lot’s of fun but one lane broke

Next time I would  Do less hot glue on the track and the cars and the track will work better
